Father’s Day

Thabo Malatetja had dreams of following an IT career. When his mother died suddenly, leaving her crèche, Dinoko Day Care in Zandspruit behind, he had a change of heart.

“I couldn’t just abandon the kids,” he says. “They relied on my mother for love, food, warmth and education.”
He took over the centre and has been providing a safe haven for the children who attend ever since. He runs the centre very professionally and it is kept immaculate. He is very hands-on and plays with the children as well as ensuring that they are mentally stimulated. He has created a wonderful environment with the little resources he has. His corrugated iron classrooms are well maintained and brightly decorated with artwork and educational items.
This year his good deeds will be rewarded as Dinoko Day Care will be undergoing a makeover courtesy JAM Switzerland. The shacks will be taken down and replaced with a new structure, including toilets and a kitchen. Volunteers will then arrive on site to paint and decorate to leave behind a bright and cheerful structure for the children.
We look forward to the transformation at the end of July.

This Father’s Day we take our hats off to Thabo and men like him who put their own dreams on hold to ensure that others have a chance in life. South Africa needs more father figures who can create a brighter future for the children.
