What a year 2020 has been! As we’ve adjusted to the Coronavirus and its repercussions – facemasks, sanitizer and regular temperature checks; lockdown, curfews and #wfh have become the new ‘normal’. Sadly, for many, unemployment, hospitalisation and even the demise of friends and loved ones has also taken place! In South Africa, COVID-19 exposed mass food insecurities leading to a hunger crisis like never before.
At the announcement of a nationwide lockdown in early March, JAM South Africa committed to continued support of underprivileged children, those that normally benefit from our school feeding programmes in nine provinces across the country. As a result of the lockdown, these programmes were placed on hold and we were forced to consider alternatives, in order to ensure that young children do not suffer. We implemented a Take-Home ration system, through a central collection point where our registered beneficiaries and their families could collect a weekly rationing of nutritious JAM porridge. Thanks to our generous donors, and some valuable new partners, we were able to implement food hamper distributions as well. To date, we have distributed food hampers to more than 255 000 families across South Africa and provided 131 406 children and their families with Take-Home rations of our JAM CSS+ porridge. We’re proud to have played a major role in the fight against hunger, as we have served in excess of 12 million meals to individuals countrywide.
AMAZING partners like YOU have made it possible for us to bring hope in these trying times. Hunger and malnutrition continue to be a leading cause of death in young children under the age of five. Health, school attendance and school performance are adversely affected by hunger, causing such children to be further disadvantaged. We cannot rest while children and their families suffer.
Every child deserves a better future!
JAM South Africa’s Early Childhood Development (ECD) feeding programmes focuses on young children, under the age of five. These programmes enable us to provide nutritional support for each child, whilst at the same time promoting and enhancing early childhood development.
Education is key to a BETTER FUTURE.
This Christmas season, give a child the gift of ‘Hope in a Red Bowl’
Our Red Bowls and the ‘cake-porridge’ that we serve, are known and loved by the communities in which we operate – so, by feeding a child, you’re providing hope.
For R50, you can feed a child for a month, for R400 you will ensure that an entire family is fed! We challenge you to donate a lifesaving gift to a child this Christmas, invite your friends and family to help you to feed as many children or families as you can!
We can all agree, it’s been a tough year but for those with so little, it’s been even tougher. Be their Christmas miracle.
