Now that the centre is protected, the staff arrived in their numbers to prepare a spacious area for a vegetable garden to be planted. JAM agricultural supervisor was there to help them to plant the seedlings. The food garden now boasts spinach, cabbage, beetroot, onion and carrots. The supervisor will check on the garden to ensure that it flourishes. The créche “mama” plans to use this fresh produce to supplement the children’s meals and also has plans to sell it to derive an income for the school.Throughout November, Lusemanzi Early Childhood Development Centre benefited from the first phase of a Makeover sponsored by Discovery Health. The old fence was so dilapidated that passersby could easily push it aside to walk through the yard to take a short cut. The project kicked off with the old fence being torn down and new one, which was painted in bright colours, being put up in its place.
To celebrate the completion of the first phase milestone, Discovery Health hosted a Christmas Party for the pre-schoolers on 6 December. The Discovery team was excited to share their love and gifts. They brought with them gifts, food, party packs, Christmas decorations and a big jumping castle and the pre-schoolers responded with delight, smiles and laughter. The Discovery team also gave the teachers and caregivers a present. Each child received a personal gift and also received a pair of TOMS from JAM.
