Children at JAM-assisted schools receive a Red Bowl of highly nutritious porridge each day. For many this is the main source of the essential macro- and micronutrients necessary for their mental and physical development.
Feeding in these schools has other benefits as well. Caregivers gain access to our monitors’ expertise and advice through regularly held forums and workshops and are able to network with fellow caregivers, learning from their experience too.
Besides childcare and educational tips, caregivers are also able to learn more about the requirements for ECD centre registration.
Many of the Early Childhood Development (ECD) centre owners have been able to save money as the burden of purchasing breakfast ingredients has been lifted from their shoulders. These savings have allowed them to invest in their centres by buying educational equipment, kitchen appliances, mattresses, blankets or improved security. A number have managed to build additional classrooms.
Mama Refilwe Mokoena at Edu Build Day Care in Boiketlong was able to save up enough to buy a laptop! Now she can type her own creche documents and apply for registration. Mama Allina Letete of Friends for Life Day Care in Finetown managed to buy bricks to expand her facility while Mama Blantina Ledwaba of Thusanang Day Care in Diepsloot invested in kitchen cupboards and educational toys.
Our Red Bowls, therefore, offer more than just a meal. They open the doors to improved educational facilities and improved education. School attendance, better concentration, parent and community participation as well as improved immune systems have been recorded in the centres we support. Not to mention the boundless energy to be found amongst healthy youngsters.
Thanks to your ongoing support, JAM South Africa has been able to feed more than 62 800 children this year!
