On one side of the street, you will see the old Nkululeko Pre and Nursery School. It looks like the centre must have been inside someone’s house and that there was very little space for the children to play outside. But across the road, is a whole different story.
The new Nkululeko Pre and Nursery School is brightly coloured and surrounded by a vast amount of wide open space, providing the children with ample room to play – there’s even a race track for the scooters!
This new scene was made possible by a team of people from Swiss organisation, Pro Life. The makeover team, brought to South Africa by JAM Switzerland, consisted of 17 dedicated and hard-working people, each with their own unique skills and talents to contribute to the success of the project. “It was an honour for us to be here. We are proud to do this work. We love you guys, you are our friends now,” says Doris Elfriede Künti, one of the Swiss makeover team members.
Mama Gladys, who started the centre in 1999, was overjoyed at the results. During the makeover week, she had celebrated her 50th birthday and could not stop crying as she said that this was the most wonderful birthday present anyone could wish for! “I love every bit that you have done for me, not just for me, for the little ones. Now they will develop holistically!” She believes the makeover will lead to more parents enrolling their children, as space is no longer constraining the ECD centre’s growth!
The children entertained the makeover team and community members with various modern and cultural dances. The star performance just had to be the rendition of a Brenda Fassie hit, complete with a six-year-old ‘Brenda’, back up singers, and boys on guitar, drums and keyboard. Too cute!
